Can football ever overtake cricket in India?

Cricket in India is more than a sport — it is part of the national identity. That is exactly why a tempting question keeps coming up as football booms: can football ever overtake cricket in India? Here is our honest assessment of both sides.

Why the question is being asked

Football is surging, especially among younger, urban fans raised on the Premier League and Fantasy Premier League. The ISL has given domestic football a proper stage. For a new generation, football is a daily habit — and that growth makes people wonder about the future of cricket in India.

The case for football

Youth interest is real and rising, the global game is more accessible than ever, and football's fast, constant action suits short attention spans and social media. If current trends continue, football's share of young Indian fans will keep growing.

The case for cricket

Cricket in India is not just popular — it is cultural infrastructure. The IPL dominates prime time, cricket cuts across every region and language, and the money and media machine behind it are unmatched. The sport is woven into childhood, conversation and commerce in a way football is still building toward.

The numbers

On viewership, revenue and grassroots reach, cricket in India holds a commanding, generational lead. Football's growth is impressive in percentage terms, but it starts from a much smaller base, and closing that gap would take decades, not years.

Our verdict

Overtake? Not any time soon — cricket's lead is simply too deep. But here is the key point: football does not need to win to matter. It can become a strong, lucrative second sport with a passionate, committed base, and that is a huge opportunity in its own right.

What to watch

Keep an eye on ISL growth, India's national-team results and how broadcasters invest in football. Those signals will tell us how big the second sport can get alongside cricket in India.
